Alternate Journals Herald's Logs: Regretful Parting and Hated Meeting (7)

A hush held sway on my ship, the Herald, and it's crew during this sudden voyage. Word came to us before our normal passenger arrived for what appeared as his last journey as he leaves Atlantis. I ordered my crew to not question him during the voyage in case this was an unfounded rumour. It became the hardest order they had ever been giving by any captain. Lord Kestrel acted normally upon boarding speaking to the sailors in jovial tones but I notice the difference. He talked to each of them slowly moving up the rank on the ship and each seem to feel a fatal permanence to his parting words to them. Most of the crew had now lapsed into silence after speaking with him feeling this was his last goodbye to them.
“The crew is trying hard to maintain a separation to not question him, mam.” my first officer informed me. “But the growing depression and silence will cause problems to us and to Lord Kestrel.” he continued annoyed. “Orders will be the only words spoken by the time we reach port if this persists.” he remarked.
“It cannot be helped at this time.” I returned. I tried hard to remain unemotional but my answer sounded blunt even to my ears. “I can understand him wanting to leave if the rumours that Her Holiness is to marry another to become our Holy Queen are truthful.”
“But that is ludicrous!” he retorted. “All of Atlantis knows She is bonded to Lord Kestrel!” he countered angrily. “No other is Her Holiness' equal and truer partner!” he added. I nodded my agreement while biting my lower lip to refrain from talking. I waved him off not wanting to hear more of this pointless debate that will assault the streets of Atlantis until, and if, a wedding does happen. The helms woman stood in silence near us during this exchange chose now to speak silently.
“All I would question is the origin of the true order behind these rumoured nuptials.” she whispered. “Odin, the Council, another member of Odin's godly kin, Lord Kestrel himself, or Her Holiness Herself.” she enumerated quickly. “Only question Lord Kestrel must be attempting to answer which may explain this sudden departure from Atlantis.”
“Is this why you remain silent around him?” I remarked.
“Your order is enough to hold my tongue captain.” she returned softly. “If it is in him to reveal truth, he will at the appropriate moment.” she added in a near whisper.
“A good observation sailor.” I stated. With a quick salute, I left her to personally check the condition of my crew at this midway point of our potential final voyage with Lord Kestrel. Silence seemed to surround my crew except for those dealing with Lord Kestrel. He laughed and tossed verbal barbs in friendly jest with the seamen and sea-women on board. They acted normal but nervous toward him. The empty finality of his tones grated on my nervous waiting for my moment to come. A whispered conversation caught my ears as I passed.
“He must know of the rumours.” one sailor muttered in hushed tones. “But he acts like nothing is different.”
“Incorrect.” the old sea-dog returned. “He would usually speak of his purpose on this voyage.” he explained in a whisper. “He voyages without purpose or reason.” he clarified. “I believe his thoughts are troubled and he seeks time away for clarity.” he added.
“It would suggest truth in the rumours of Her Holiness marrying another.” he retorted triumphantly. “But does it mean she is being given the throne by Council upon detaching Herself from Lord Kestrel?” he continued quickly and quietly. The veteran sailor shrugged as he glanced passed him to me and beyond where Lord Kestrel laughed with a foursome of seamen.
“Let time iron out the truth.” the elder stated. “Rumours are for fools and childhood tales.” he intoned. “I doubt you would be part of this crew if you were one of those two.” he concluded. He flashed me a quick toothy grin before shuffling off to do his duties. The other muttered a few profanities before turning to unexpectedly be nose to nose with me. I heard him gulp as he came to attention.
“Just speculating with wiser counsel away from our passenger's hearing mam.” he reported to me. “I believe it does not infringe on your orders to us.” he hazarded.
“Remember that Lord Kestrel's hearing is sharper than anything that walks the lands, glides in the air, or floats the waters.” I returned sharply. “And you would never know that he was listening.” I added in a whisper. I slowly raised one eyebrow tilting my head toward our jovial passenger.
“I am sorry for taking such a risk mam.” he snapped. He quickly added a salute before rushing off in silence to do his work. I sighed realizing the reason behind most of their silence. Lord Kestrel superb hearing caused a paranoid hush over my crew to avoid breaking my commands.
“Then you should not order them to do something detrimental.” Kestrel stated at my side. I do commend myself for not jumping in shock at this surprise. I turned slowly to face him.
“Is it finally my turn?” I remarked. “No one else under my rank that need to be told goodbye?” I continued not hiding my words from my crew. Kestrel's shoulders slumped as he stood before me in silence for a moment. “Would you rather I play along with your farce?” I added softer.
“It is true that I am unsure if and when I will be returning to Atlantis.” he replied casually. “It is my duties and not rumours prompting my departure for an unknown length of time.” he reported. His tones had returned to being jovial and carefree. “I will make sure to return to Atlantis riding your Herald captain Destine.” he continued easily.
“As you see fit but my own duties prevent more lengthy discussions between us at this time.” I returned brusquely. I did not wait for a reply before walking away.
Kestrel's words toured the ship quickly becoming general knowledge to all within the hour. My order not to speak of the rumoured wedding and ascension to the throne held firm. My crew took Lord Kestrel's admission as a chance to question him of this mission he embarked upon. The growing silence abated even with the cryptic replies from our passenger. Everything became normal once more on my ship til the evening prior to us making port. A soft knock sounded on the frame of my open door upon that last evening at sea.
“Do you have the time to speak now captain?” Lord Kestrel asked softly. I glanced to see him standing in the doorway waiting for a reply from me.
“Yes, if you can assist with these supposed navel charts.” I replied bluntly. The navigator that stood across from me chuckled wryly as she placed and moved the maps again to attempt making a logical shoreline we would be following.
“The middle three map sections must be reversed.” he answered from the door. He moved slowly to the navigator's side. In silence, he exchanged the two maps bordering the middle map of the line of seven making a complete profile of the western coast of the Americas.
“The crooked middle sections still seems odd to me.” the navigator returned. “Thank you Sir.” she added quickly. She collected them in order they would be travelling by them. With a quick nod to me, she rushed from the room hugging the placed maps to her bosom.
“May we speak freely now?” he asked in a near whisper in the creaking room. I moved to close the door before nodding to him.
“Did your friend on the Leviathan receive your words without speaking them?” I asked quietly. He nodded to me with a small grin on his face and a mischievous gleam in his eyes. “And what do you know of this dignitary we are to collect after depositing you at the tip of this continent?” I continued in mock ease. “This Lord Munin?” I clarified.
“Supposedly a child of Odin's wife from a retaliatory fling on Frigga's part.” he replied easily. “He is a widower of an Atlantian minor noble family.” he continued. “One son was born from the marriage who lives with his relatives in Atlantis since his mother's death.” he explained. I stared in dumbfounded confusion by the sheer knowledge held within this normal man's mind. “He travels to Atlantis to wed Her Holiness and become King there.” he concluded bluntly. I took me a few moments to register his words to me.
“King!” I sputtered in disbelief. Kestrel nodded in silence at me. “What claims does that bastard of the gods have over the throne of Atlantis?” I continued angrily. He grappled my flexing hands to force them together open palmed in front of me. “How could Her Holiness agree to this insult to you?” I added weaker.
“She says it is the will of the Council while they claim it is the will of Odin that this happens.” he explained slowly to me. “Both are adamant and I go seek the truth behind their conflicting views.” he continued calmly. “But, I fear once they have mounted the throne, it will be impossible and pointless to remove them.” he added softer.
“But why not challenge them by marrying Her Holiness yourself, Lord Kestrel?” I retorted. “All of Atlantis would usher both of you to the throne instantly without question.” I added forcibly.
“If I take the throne of Atlantis, the world would suffer.” he answered. “I also doubt the Atlantians would survive under my strict rules.” he added. A small mirthless chuckle escaped him chilling me to the bone.
“What can the navy expect from our new royal leaders?” I asked. I left the matter of stopping this betrayal in his hands while focusing on stalling the corruption of our ranks.
“I cannot advise you in this matter.” he reported with a sigh. “Best to ask him once he boards your ship for such information.” he suggested. “Or wait and see what his commands to the navy are and stonewall him at that point.” he continued. A little mischievous grin was back on his face. “Please remember that your ship is still at my disposition whenever I call upon it captain Destine.”
“As you suggest, I will do.” I returned. He smiled in earnest as he saluted me like any other sailor would before leaving. Those were the last words spoken from him. He disembarked in silence to vanish in the crowd with nothing but his pack upon his hip. The rest of the trip was quiet as everyone including myself delved in the last words we had with Lord Kestrel. I add the moment of meeting the future King of Atlantis who was an arrogant self-righteous man that rub us all raw long before our direct return to Atlantis.
Our quiet but pleasant trip ended as we collected Lord Munin in the northern reaches. Dressed in bright blues, reds, and greens, this peacock was a beacon of colour standing at the end of the stone dock. The look upon the faces of his retinue being rid of him still held fear in the elation shining through their eyes. A grey cloaked figure stood at his side leaning in to receive or give whispered words under the hooded head to Munin.
“Finally!” he hollered upon boarding. “Get those belongs upon the ship post haste so I may be gone from this retched hole.” he ordered indirectly around him.
The cloaked figure could not or would not hide her sex with her closed cloak considering the overpowering smell of rose water that enveloped her. She boarded at his heels giving the feel of a lap dog by her movements. She held firmly against the gusts of wind the edge of her hood with a dainty gloved hand which belittled her near six foot stature. No signs of her feet shown from under the cloak but the distinctive clicking of solid pointed heels sounded on the wooden boards. The loose cloak was held closed firmly by what seemed a good grip in the heavy gusts that blasted in from the sea toward the shore. Her over all shape was mostly concealed by the cloak but bulged to reveal hidden bosom of a slightly larger than average size.
“Captain!” the peacock Munin hollered. He stood looking down his upturned nose at my sailors with this mystery woman at his back. “Captain!” he bellowed again holding the last syllable for much larger than needed.
“I am sorry Lord Munin but I am occupied making my ship ready to depart in a hurry.” I replied. I projected my voice to be heard above the din of loading. “My cabin boy will show you to your suit for this trip.” I reported over my shoulder at him. I had barely taken three steps before the popinjay answered.
“I expected the top official to be a guide and at the disposition of the most noble of passengers.” he retorted loudly. A silence followed his words as my sailors froze in mid motion. “I will have to change this ignorance once I sit upon the throne.” he continued arrogantly. The whisper of cutlasses and rapiers partially pulled slowly from their sheath sounded in my ears.
“This is my ship!” I informed him bluntly. The hushed murmur hissed out in a spiral from my sailor around me. “The most noble Lord Kestrel sees my crew and ship as the pinnacle of proper behaviour to name us his main Atlantian transport ship.” I continued louder. “If you prove your honourable claims, I may decide not dragging you in a dingy behind us on our next voyage Munin.” The sounds of rustling rapiers and cutlasses punctuated my final words, I walked away ignoring him for the rest of the trip.
Words from my crew showed his arrogant blindness remained unabated by my idle threat. He complained about his accommodations, his meals, the condition of the deck, and every other small insignificant detail he laid eyes upon while on my ship. He threatened handing a list of his finding to Admiral Pierce claiming to have my crew retrained properly, including my removal as captain. I ignored his crowish squawking which proved why he would have been named after Odin's wise raven. In just this short trip, I understood the look of fear and elation that was mixed on the faces of his people finally freed of his mentally abusive presence.
No one waited for him as he left the Herald screaming for servant to move his belongings. None came forward to guide him through the street of Atlantis nor Royal Guards to watch over him. I felt a twinge of pity for him but it was short lived as he screamed how uncivilized Atlantis had become when they ignored their future King and ultimate ruler. The deckhands gave him withered stares as they unloaded the Herald but mostly ignored his behaviour as he ranted away. I walked along my deck reminding my sailors to not stare at this man we were rid of.

Last Moments in Atlantis (70)

As I appeared in the foyer of my home, my three companions waited wild-eyed. They stared at me as the multiple rumours twirled like galaxies in their minds. I sighed deeply before signalling them to follow as I walked away. I led this confused parade into our inner garden where trees came alight softly around our tense gathering.
“I must believe rumours of coming grand events have reached all of you in different fashion.” I said slowly and calmly.
“This letter is no rumour!” Cole retorted. His anxiety was palpable in the open garden.
“Nor are the words of Holy Annianka claiming the Council's evil request!” Meli snapped back.
“Neither are the words of Young Lord Bryan pointing a finger at me celestial family through the Wise Woman Brigit.” I returned passively. “The source of this idea changes with each person you speak with.” I told them. “All holding proof in hand or beyond the dishonour to lie about their claim.” I added. Silence filled the garden as my companions casted sheepish glances at each other.
“But one part of all these stories relate to your departure.” Sert commented quietly. I remained silent as all their eyes moved to face me. I felt their combined disbelief followed by pleading me to stay as my silence proved this tale as truthful. “Why?” Sert shouted for all of them. I released a deep shuttering sigh.
“My presence would cause too many negative reactions.” I reported to them. I sat upon the stone bench slowly signalling them to be at easy. They remained standing staring angrily at me. “Some faction could use me as an excuse for their actions.” I stated slowly. “The new King Munin would easily used that to attempt turning me into a villain in the eyes of the Atlantian people for anything that goes wrong.” I explained softly. “Forcing my permanent removal at this crucial moment to solidify his hold upon Atlantis.”
“Atlantis would revolt against him!” Meli retorted.
“The Council would be his second target since they would stand with the people for Lord Kestrel.” Cole remarked angrily. “They would have to disband and join the citizens that do not fully trust them over this decision.” he continued. “Leaving their Guards under Royal ruling.” he concluded. He was glancing at the ground as he finished speaking. I sense understanding forming in Sert's mind as his eyes slowly rose to meet mine.
“It is more noble to leave Atlantis than be the cause of such destructive chaos to come.” Sert proclaimed loudly. The other two stared at him as I nodded to him. Cole had been already slowly realizing the truth I placed forward for my departure which was made whole with Sert's words. Slowly it fully dawned on Meli as the other two sets of eyes returned their gaze to me.
“As the person seen as Her Holiness' Right Hand and Bonded Mate,” I continued slowly, “any child first born from Her could be confused as being my offspring.” Their eyes went blank and cold as I saw they would believe this fact easier than the heir being from Munin's loins. “More reason he could use to discredit me pushing the child and Her Holiness away from the throne to take fully power for himself.” I explained slowly. “Taking full royal power which would facilitate my permanent removal and dismissing the Council to lord alone above all of Atlantis.”
“The Council would not submit nor would the Atlantian people.” Cole screamed at me.
“If the Council refuses, the Atlantians would see it as an insult against the Throne and cause a war between them.” Sert told him softly.
“And we cannot believe that the Council will not used this to excuse themselves to repeat the war caused with the Usurper.” Meli remarked.
“The only reason they agreed to this edict was for Holy Annianka and to save Atlantis from turmoil.” Cole returned angrily. He gave me a quick glance and half shrug to let me know he knew my part in that final decision.
“I can attest that Colêsträ's words are truthful in this matter.” I stated calmly. “But I cannot remain and have another bloody chapter written in Atlantian history for Munin to settle on the Throne alone.”
“When are you departing?” Meli asked bluntly. “When will you return to us?” she added in the silence that formed.
“I must leave with the Herald in the morning as it depart to collect the new King.” I announced softly. Meli gasped and squealed as she covered her mouth and tears sprang from her eyes. I felt as much as heard the gulp in Sert's throat at my words. Silence was the only reaction I received from Cole. “I will have to verify with those that have sent me.” I continued slowly. “They may not allow me to return simply because of the problems my presence might cause.” I concluded.
      “What?” they squawked in unison.
“They may decide that my gift would be of better use elsewhere.” I lied bluntly. “My oaths to them take precedence.” I informed them angrily. This act was to protect them from my own annoyance of this line of event I could do nothing to stop indirectly. The sadness from them flooded over me reminding me perfectly of the hungry waves swallowing the ship I first arrived in Atlantis upon. I frowned letting my false anger slide into the true sadness that join with theirs as we all drowned together. I moved to sit on the grass closer to them as we all formed a tight circle. This is how my last night was spent; sitting in my garden with them for what felt like the last time as we all drowned in the sadness that overwhelmed us.
The first rays of false dawn's light found us still sitting in the garden having murmured stories all night. I moved stiffly and slowly as I collect the few items I would carry with me into the world. My trio of companions followed in silence. I could feel them fighting back their anger caused by the sadness of parting this way. My steps felt heavy like my heart did over this needed exodus on my part. My partial truths were based on the worse possible outcome of me becoming nothing but a scapegoat for all the disruptions in Atlantis. I would not give this new King Munin that chance if I could not become that for the Council's attempt at a peaceful solution. I knew at that moment that this was the event warned by the great foreboding assaulting me a scant months ago.
I left within the hour of false dawn with my travelling bag bouncing on its shoulder strap against my hip alone. I felt Sert's urge to ask if I needed anything else for my journey. An emotion shared with Meli who bit her tongue constantly to not scream that question at me. From Cole, a confusion of warring emotions bounced between the darkened regions of his hidden mind. All three Captains stood in full Atlantian Royal garb to escort me this last time through the streets of Atlantis. I sensed the Ferret's ad-hock leader Khën slinking in the shadows following us like a vigilant ghost.
“Miss Hope suggested forcibly that we should not question your reasons for departing at this time.” Ent commented. He walk at my right while Rez took my left and Curd lead the way. Meli, Sert, and Cole walked at our back in a silent processional. We had reached the halfway mark before the Wolf Captain spoke. “But this sudden departure is ill timed.” he remarked with a growl.
“Duty and honour prompts his actions.” Sert retorted bluntly. “We will keep Atlantis in one piece while awaiting your return, Sir.” he added at me.
“I will keep a close scrutiny on the Council to make them avoid idiotic mistakes.” Cole reported. “If I cannot do so directly ...” he began then sighed.
“We can think of something if we put our minds and hearts together.” Meli stated in mock cheerfulness. Her red rimmed eyes still held unshed tears and proved her mood as a lie.
“We will report any issues larger than we can handle to the Guard Captains immediately.” Sert assured them. I felt the doubt in my trio seeing it impossible to equal my presence, actions, and protection of Atlantis.
“All will be well.” I told them. They nodded their lies to me in unison wearing the same forced false smile on their faces. I shrugged to the Captains as they looked bewildered by the behaviour of my team. I mental made a note to thank my team for this show of strength before the worried Captains. “My team will continue my work admirably here during my absence.” I informed the Captains. “Deal with them in the same fashion as with me during daily encounters and problems.” I ordered.
“As you wish it, Sir.” Ent returned unconvinced. The Captains glanced worried at each other and toward the shadows where stood the hidden member of their ruling circle. “I still see this trip of yours as ill timed.” he repeated. So far, our pace was as somber as a funeral march through the wide empty streets of Atlantis.
“But you still emptied the streets?” I commented in jest. “It will not quell the rumours of my forced departure.”
“Another suggestion from the feline missing this private parade.” Curd growled from the lead.
“And a normal practice to expedite your departures, Sir.” Ent informed me. “Cannot have you delaying ships by being late Lord Kestrel.” he continued. A purring chuckle erupted from our lead tiger.
“Wished we could do the same during your returns.” Curd purred back among the chuckles.
“Would cut down the amount of procurers trying to steal away your time.” Ent remarked with a shrug. “Are there procurers in the other world like ours?”
“They are called merchants.” Meli informed them. “But they require metal money to procure all items unlike the Atlantian procurers.” she added.
“Weapons and armour are extremely costly in their system unless collected as a soldier in war times.” Sert commented. “It give human that are armed more respect in their world than the peasants in their fields.”
“A very uncouth way of thinking that is strictly a human failing in my eyes.” Cole retorted.
“It is the way of the human world to use metal tokens of differing values to trade for items.” I explained. “My three replacement can show you how it works.” I continued casually. “They have amassed a sizable collection while travelling with me.”
“Is it a good thing exposing our younger citizens to the human ideals?” Rez grumbled next to me.
“If we are to function as proper representatives of Atlantis, we must understand how they think.” Meli responded.
“Considering each rank of their society have a different mind set, it can become complicated.” Cole remarked.
“Which is why I let you two debate it while I speak to their soldiers.” Sert commented with a shrug.
“We do not debate!” Meli retorted imperiously.
“We argue like she-wolves in heat.” Cole returned with a straight face. Meli gave him a cold glare before the smirk showed on Cole's face.
“You will not trick me today Flower.” she replied with a giggle. “It is more like a pair of sisters when we butt heads.” she admitted. He giggled back in his Flower voice.
“I like the fact you can now see me as your sweet, younger, and more beautiful looking sister.” he continued in his feminine voice. “It's a miracle!”
“And this is what I deal with daily.” I told the Captains. “Now you understand my drive to be constantly escaping.” I whispered. Rolls a gruff chuckles erupted from the Captains as we reached the harbour.
Only the Herald sat moored to the polished stone dock while a small portion of the grand Atlantian Fleet sat to one side waiting for their flagship to sail. I stopped at the edge of the dock staring at this ship I travelled upon regularly over the last hundred years. It will take centuries for humans and non-humans shipwrights alike to create a vessel as wonderful as the normal Atlantian battle schooners. Even after many millenniums, they would barely come close to the quality of the Herald and only after the Fallen Ones faced their darkness could they fathom the complexities of the Leviathan. I stared at captain Destine's floating armour and weapons made of polished wood rare in the outer world and preformed metal straight from the earth itself. No barnacles would dare attaching themselves to the hull of the Herald in fear of facing the zeal of the crew for their captain, their ship, and their lands. A dozen pristine white sails placed to both push the Herald forward and lift it gently from the water to give it unmatchable speed to the ships of other nations.
It was only in part a lie since the Lemurian ships could easily equal the speed of the matching Atlantian vessel. The Leviathan was an exception that special abilities came from an experimental engine officially banned from being used in Lemuria. With the rift opening over the main harbour of Lemuria, this technology was outlawed even if it works extremely well under the watchful experienced eye of captain and engineer Lockey. If the Lemurians my Brothers dealt with were to discover their ship's secrets, they would be condemned causing more repercussions as that island and them exploded at this event. I sensed the Leviathan approaching bearing my Brother Chilörąn to Atlantis as I departed. I strode forward with a smile on my face greeting the dock-hands and sailors cheerfully while making my way to and up the gangplank of the Herald.
“Captain Destine?” I called out. I stood on her mid-deck with the cheery smile still glowing on my face. “I understand your rush” I stated on her approach to me. “but I must request a delay after leaving the Atlantian reef zone.” She moved closer to stare hard into my eyes.
“Reason?” she barked out at me.
“The Leviathan will arrive shortly carrying a friend to Atlantis.” I replied. “I only need a moment to converse mentally to him.” I explained.
“I see no problems caused by doing so.” she returned. I bowed with wide arms in gratitude to her indulging my whims. We cleared the harbour area within seconds of my boarding and barely a half hour passed to exit the jutting protective reefs of Atlantis.
We floated in silence waiting for the sails of the Leviathan to show on the horizon. A scream from the crow's nest warned us as Lockey's ship flew on the water to meet us. The Herald moved under my feet to meet the other ship to shorten the delay. The two ships' acceleration died to let them drift at a crawl as they floated parallel by each other. Chichi stood in the prow as was I. We moved slowly in a synchronized pattern down the port side that faced the other ship as mental I filled his mind with my orders and the information he needed to perform those duties. He was not exactly being sent as my replacement. I was to watch over Sert. Meli, Cole, and Atlantis for now. If no solution came to my mind or into my visions, I would dump this affair upon his shoulders to deal with any way he saw fit.
With a final nod between us as we stood on the bow of our respective ship, I watched the Leviathan launch forward into the safe path through the jutting protection as we shoot away from Atlantis. It was my last chance to look upon this mystic place that, outside of the Void where I was born, I could call home. The sun rising in our path coloured the tips of the marble spires with pink, red, and golden hues at our back. I turned away from this sight seeing myself disappearing in the world. My words end here since I cannot see myself having one-one hundredth of the importance Atlantis held in this world.

Young Lord Bryan And Young Redpath (69)

We had resorted using one of the portal gates room to reach the estate where the future Prince resided with his mother's family. He smiled brightly as he was told of my unexpected visit. I was in the archway watching his reaction as one of the servants told him of my presence. I slowly entered the internal courtyard where the boy spared against an articulated construction with miss Hope at my side.
“I have hoped for chance to simply meet the noble and renowned Envoy of the Ones On High.” he stated. With his weapon cast aside he moved forward at me with outstretched arms.
“I am here by Lady Hope's request to learn about your father.” I told him softly. He did not pause in his motion to embrace me as is common between the noble kin of Atlantis. “This is a matter to clear the doubts in my being caused by the rumours of that man.” I whispered to him. I felt him slump for but a moment before his body became ridged as he pulled back slowly from me.
“Allowing that animal any power in Atlantis would be a disgrace to our people.” he retorted bluntly.
“A civil war between the citizens and the Council would rip Atlantis apart if we attempt stopping this event.” I told him.
“Then take the Throne with Her Holiness!” he spurted out. “Block this insult to the Throne and all of Atlantis!” he continued bluntly. “Atlantis would accept this with open arms.” he added merrily. I felt the tension melting away from him in his mind locked on a solution that would protect Atlantis fully.
“I cannot without belittling my other duties to the humans and other races of the earth.” I explained. I did not show anger or frustration over this decision. “And those who sent me here might destroy me and Atlantis if I follow that easy but blissful path.”
“If they allow my father the Throne, Atlantis will pay the price for this fallacy!” he retorted annoyed.
“You lack faith in Annianka holding your father at bay?” I remarked with a small smirk. He looked up at me with an embarrassed blush.
“She will stand for all as their Holy Highness above all others.” miss Hope growled at the boy. He blushed many deeper shades of crimson but I sensed doubt in the tigress at her own words. I knew why she felt this way from the discussions between her and the Guard Captains regarding the oddness surrounding their Holy Heart they protected.
“The Holy Heart cannot stop his unfaithful insatiable sexual appetite.” the boy suddenly screamed back. “He will bring one or more of his concubines with him.” he explained. “Her Holiness will only receive the nuptial night to legitimize the wedding contract before being thrown aside.” he continued bluntly. “He will be a lazy, faithless King who will decide matters on the lines of ease and self gratification for himself alone ignoring the true needs of Atlantis.”
“That is not the worse king I have dealt with.” I returned casually. “And I will be absent as he takes the Throne.” I continued. “I do not know how long it will be before I return.”
“I promise to help my new mother reign father in until your return.” he snapped back. He flashed me a quick smile as he bowed to me instantly upon his oath to me.
“Have our Prince transferred to a Royal Guard quadre as he completes tactical lessons.” I ordered to miss Hope. “He should receive proper mixed training to be a true Prince of Atlantis.”
“As you see fit, sir.” miss Hope replied purring.
      “Prince?” he muttered dumbfounded.
“You will be Prince of Atlantis.” I admitted easily. “As a child of Lord Munin, you will become a Prince when he becomes King.” I explained. Bryan's eyes widened at my words as he visibly trembled like a leaf before me.
“Can I abdicate this title?” he nearly screamed at me. I sensed the overwhelming panic gripping him tightly. “I do not wish to ever be King!” he admitted. I place my hand on his shoulder reaching into his emotions to calm him enough to be rational to my thoughts.
“An heir born of Munin and Her Holiness would take the Throne of Atlantis.” miss Hope informed him.
“As Prince, you would be a military leader of the rank of war commander while your half brother or sister would be ruler.” I commented.
“I can accept this.” he replied slowly. “But my tactical knowledge is non-existent.” he half complained. I chuckled softly at this minor problem.
“Which is why I have recommended you transferred to the Royal Guards including tactical training.” I returned. “I believe him training with a Ferret Squad would accomplish both.” I told miss Hope. “Meanwhile, he is to be enrolled in the military college with other potential officers in training as a Prince should.”
“Truly wise counsel that will be followed directly.” the tigress answered. “Within two days, A Ferret Guard will collect you and your gear to start your new training as future Prince of Atlantis.” she explained to him. I did not question why she jumped upon this idea of mine in front of Bryan. I felt like she showed who was seen as the true ruler of Atlantis before the future Prince which might cause issues in the future as he turned to me as leader instead of toward his father or Annianka.
“My original purpose for this visit was to learn more about your father.” I explained softly. “Lady Hope suggested you would give me an unbiased and truthful view of Lord Munin.” I continued easily. I saw the blush form on Bryan's young face at the indirect praise. “No need to be flustered among like minded beings.” I cautioned him. “What can you reveal about that man who is your father?”
“History or personality?” he returned. I saw in his mind the shift that showed he will be a good tactical leader for his half sister. “As a son of a spiritually driven noble house of Atlantis, our genealogy must be known to me as a perfect memory.” he explained with a grin.
“Then speak to me of his history first before relating his personality traits.” I told him.
“You will not find reasons in his past for his dishonourable behaviour.” Bryan warned me before starting. I nodded my acceptance to the restriction on his tale. “Born from Frigga in Valhalla from a mortal warlord of supposed reputation unfounded outside of my father's mind.” he reported. “He spent his soul's youth in Valhalla getting pranked by most of the other man-gods and a few true blooded deity of the Norse.” he continued easily. “He's still on his first life in the mortal coil using some foreign deity's trick to prolong his life.” he continued. I cringed at these words as multiple possibilities that are more harmful than beneficial floated through my mind. “He started these ludicrous ideas shortly after I was born and my mother died from child labour away from Atlantis.”
“What are signs of those deistic tricks he was using?” I asked softly.
“I would not know exactly what reaction it had on him.” he answered quickly. “I was sent back to Atlantis barely old enough to travel with a retainer or more precisely one of his whore he was bored with.” he explained. “The few letters I received mentioned he had bargained with different gods and goddesses to extend his life through tricks he purchased from them.” he informed us. “Other things mentioned is his letter was the latest potential mother I might be receiving until all the letters stopped for close to 70 years.” he stated. “Then I received word that he would be arriving to marry Her Holiness within the month.” he added. I saw his face shift into anger at this thought.
“I understand your anger at this.” I answered. “Did he state who ordered this wedding?”
“He spoke of Brigit's people through her wise counsel to Odin giving this recommendation.” he replied softly. “Would you know who these being would be?” he asked. I kept my face passive as I shrugged in false ignorance. “The few times he visited here, he was always accompanied by at least one concubine and acted like all Atlantians where mere uneducated children compared to him.” he concluded his tale.
“I thank you for this chance to meet you and doubly so for your information.” I stated. I bowed deeply to him in typical Atlantian royal court fashion. He blushed embarrassed by my show of respect I gave him. He bowed in kind back to me. I snarled at him for a moment.
“I would have no honour if I did not give you proper reverence for what you truly are for Atlantis.” he retorted. I stood at attention showing a regal countenance proving his right to be a Prince of Atlantis. I smiled feeling that I left Atlantis in the good hands of my daughter and Prince Bryan. We excused ourselves and left with no further words exchanged between us. I walked blindly down the streets with miss Hope still at my side. I did not even question why she remain away from Annianka this long just to guide me around Atlantis. It was late in the afternoon but I missed the warning that I would not be allowed to return home right away because of the blindness I suffered.
I feared that the progenitors of the Ancient Ones and the Old Ones would order the complete destruction of Atlantis as this situation worsened. I doubted that those who saw themselves as the “Powers That Be” had ignored the older higher planed beings coming to reside upon the planet they claimed dominion over. Some of their offspring was the base for the pantheon of deities infecting this world stealing strength and free will of the people they trick into supporting them. Humanity suffered from all these beings playing godlets having their chosen sheeps slaughter each other for their own stupid form of glory.
“He will be happy to meet you since the kitten knows he bares your noble Atlantian name.” the tigress commented. I shook my head as I slipped out of my dark reveries. Glancing around me, I realized we had walked into one of the Feral Guard Clan's compounds in Atlantis. “He is only a dozen years old but shows incredible prowess which many attest to sharing the name of Kestrel.” I stopped dead.
      “What?” I interjected confused.
“The panther cub that was named in your honour.” she reminded me gently. I groaned at forgetting such a detail so quickly. I considered this absent memory linked to me forcing myself off this island before the chaos began.
“My mind has much to deal with before departing.” I stated softly. “It would be an honour meeting my young namesake.” I continued with a smile and a nod.
The area we stood in seemed lesser touched than the normal sections of Atlantis. Grass grew in the wider dirt lines between the cobbles like a wide garden pathways. Trees grew in a wild placement pattern while still being well manicured. The simple single story wood and stone homes sat in a sporadic cluster in small groups around the oldest and largest trees. I noted, as I examined the taller trees, the rare half hidden aerie homes of the less numerous avian types. We slowly started moving as my mind realized the simplicity that the Royal Guards lived in.
“You seem troubled.” miss Hope said softly.
“Have the Ferals agreed to live this way?” I returned.
“We need little but the space to train in our zeal to protect all of Atlantis.” she returned. “And this gives our animal touched hearts peace.” she showed the entirety around her.
“Odd for people that represent the pomp and grandeur of royalty live as simple as the peasants of the outside world.” I remarked. I continued following in silent contemplation of this simple naturalist lifestyle.
“This cluster is the Redpath Clan where lives your namesake in panther kitten form.” she reported. She stood to one side of a pair of short posts that marked the edge of this panther clan's territory. She waved me forward while her nose and the edge of her lips twitched. I had ignored the fact that she had shifted into her fully human form after leaving Bryan's family estate. The mild whimsical mood slipped passed her animalistic mental shields. My physical senses sharpened as my feet crossed the invisible line formed by the posts.
The first feline pounced at me from a patch of tall grass. With a side step while twisting my body, I allowed the kitten to slam into the second cat cub attempting to attack. Laughter escaped me as I continued this game of pounce and dodge with the dozen kitten that lined the short pathway to the house. Those that failed to catch me stood on the side of the path like living guide posts that miss Hope followed with growing mischievous grin. It was an enjoyable way to ease the tension but not vigorous enough to dispense all of it fully. It was the thirteenth kitten much smaller than the others that caught me off guard.
I had used my normal speed to dodge the young cats playing so far. The last puff of black fur shoot from behind a tree onto the last few feet of the pathway between me and the house. It barely touched the stone before redirecting itself like a bolt-like projectile at me. I slipped to the left as I noted the kitten shifting his body to change the trajectory to match my side step. I slapped my hand out reflexively to bat the kitten aside while sliding back to the right. I did not see him twist a second time as I suddenly wore a painful black furred mitten.
“Got'em!” the kitten growled. All four sets of small but sharp claws were firmly latched into my skin. “Nothing is as fast as little Kestrel.!” it purred merrily. I laughed at his proclamation while he still held firm to my hand. I heard miss Hope's soft purring laughter joining mine before glancing behind me at the defeated panther cubs.
“Well done Young Redpath.” the tigress stated. She shifted into her humanoid feline form to the merriment of the other kittens. Kestrel Redpath still clung to my arm purring in merriment. “But it is not surprising for a Kestrel to snag a Kestrel.” she added purring louder. I watched as the dozen panther attackers gulp as they saluted me. I looked at the much younger ball of fur seeing wide yellow cat's-eyes staring at me blankly. I felt the his grip loosen to let himself slide from my hand to the foot stone before me.
“Lord Kestrel?” he meowed in shock.
“It is an honour to meet one that bears my given name so appropriately.” I replied calmly. I smiled as I bowed to him. I barely heard a sound but found the kitten had bolted. I raised my mildly injured arm noting the four set of close packed puncture wounds because of the drops of blood. With a quick flash of my healing nebula, the marks vanished. “He still needs to be less shy.” I remarked to the white tigress. She pointed to a tree a dozen paces away.
“He is behind the tree.” she mouthed to me. I moved using my stardust wings to increase my stealth to the designated tree. I slowly peered around the tree to spot him curled up with his knees against his forehead.
“I should have known it was Lord Kestrel!” he reprimanded himself. “Stupid unobservant kitten I am.” he meowed miserably. I moved around to kneel in front trapping him in place.
“Showing skills lacking from your elder siblings proves you neither stupid nor unobservant.” I told him. The kitten slowly raised his face to show tears free flowing from his golden eyes. “And kestrel's are renowned for attacking much larger targets successfully.” I informed him gently. He rubbed the tears from his eyes with the side of his pawed hand. “You bear the name rightfully, Young Kestrel Redpath.” He was on his padded feet quickly bowing to me.
“Thank you for such kind words to a silly kitten, Sir.” he purred. “I can lead you to our elders which you must have urgent business with.” he stated politely. He half moved toward the ring of houses before I could place my hand on his shoulder to stop him.
“My business here is to meet you who shares my name.” I proclaimed. “My joining this training exercise comes from miss Hope's whimsical cattish nature.” I admitted with a grin. “And the most appropriate fashion to meet you.”
“You are here for me?” Redpath whispered. His golden-yellow eyes bulged. His jaw hung loose. He trembled visibly as he stood staring at me. “Really?” he sputtered at my nod.
“Yes Young Redpath.” I replied loudly. From around the tree, I spotted the dozen panthers that I avoided staring in awe at the kitten before me that was barely the height of my mid thigh. “Show me your clans territory while we speak.” I ordered calmly. “I would like to knows your views on honour, Atlantis, and the world beyond.” I added softer. He flashed me a toothy grin before bowing to me then signalled the path to my left.
I spent most of the evening speaking with this sharp minded kitten of barely a dozen years old. My visions showed him twenty years older sharing food with Meli in my garden on Atlantis. I smiled at the thought of someone else helping them while I watched over them from far away. During this time, I did not need to look to know miss Hope followed in silence. I bid him goodnight as Redpath started yawning as we spoke.
“They are raising him with stories of your exploits.” miss Hope informed me. She waited until we left the Redpath's area before speaking. “Does he appear deserving of sharing your name?” she asked softly.
“He truly lives like the kestrel being small and fearless.” I returned quickly. I heard a purring chuckle escape her. “His views of honour mirror my own in near perfection.” he admitted softly. “But some views of Atlantis and the world beyond seem naive.”
“He is still very young.” she replied softly.
“But out performing students twice his age and older.” I countered.
“And a tactical nightmare as his teachers state.” she remarked.
“I am presuming he attempts victory alone disregarding team mates?” I stated. She nodded causing memories from my true childhood to breach my self imposed mental blocks. “I was just like him as a true child long ago.” I whispered back. I remember arguing with the column of light that I did not require assistance. They still asked me to select one being born of the first race existing to become my Brother in their light. “He will learn eventually to gather trusted beings closely around him.” I said. The vision of older Redpath breaking bread with Mekiliean in the estate's garden replaced my secret memories. “Extremely good and trustworthy sibling like allies.” I half whispered to myself. I saw the faces of my Brothers and Sisters in their Light followed by the scornful sneering visage of my true sister, Genia.
“You seem to keep slipping deep into thoughts.” miss Hope commented. “I can understand anger or regret caused by your noble actions today.” she continued. The tigress could not hid the growl of her resistance to my actions she called noble. “But this peacefulness is disconcerting to say the least.” she whispered.
“Preparing for my last night with my companions.” I answered falsely. “Best you return to Annianka's side.” I recommended softly. I bowed to her and portalled my way home without further pause.

The Council of Atlantis (68)

“Why did you agree with those idiots?” miss Hope growled at my side. We stood alone in the antechamber waiting to meet the full Council.
“Annianka stated that she would sacrifice anything to regain her lost position.” I stated bluntly. “If they attempt stopping her, copies of that letter will appear in the hands of the citizens inflaming a revolt against the Council.” I explained.
“But if you tell the citizens of Atlantis that you stand with the Council?” she roared back. “Born of a goddess does not qualify him being our King!” she retorted.
“She will do everything in Her power to protect Her citizens.” I shrieked back. “Even putting the child Munin in his place.” The doors into the central Council Hall opened ending our discussion.
“Lord Kestrel requesting an audience and counsel with the august body of the Council of Atlantis!” a page announced us loudly. “The Envoy is accompanied by Lady Hope, leader of the Prides of Atlantis.” I walked forth with miss Hope in the guardian position a step behind my right shoulder. A shaft of brighter light illuminated a central podium in place for dignitaries meeting the Council formally. I kept a sedated pace showing respect to the gathered members. They waited impatiently for me to reach the podium with my tigress escort.
“We recognize your need to be present but cannot assist you with a judgement upon this request from Odin.” the Council spokesman stated directly at me. I realized he wanted me to end this debate without destroying all of them.
“We have no proof that this is Odin's wishes!” one retorted from his seat. I held my tongue while the tigress growled softly at my side.
“What would Her Holiness have to gain by lying to us?” a female protested. “She already holds all the privileges of Queen over Atlantis!”
“Then hand Her the title and throne without being forced to marry beneath Her stature.” countered another woman. “Lord Kestrel could steal Her down the aisle!” she added. I minor round of applaud followed.
“We would accept this if the last Royal had not gone mad when linked to the Heartstone!” protested another male. “But Lord Kestrel as Her King could sway many of us.” he continued.
“Her outbursts would be a political suicide if She were our Queen not matter who shares the throne with Her.” a woman reminded them all.
“Enough!” I screamed bringing silence in the chamber. “I must clarify points this Council have failed to understand.” I proclaimed. I reached out mentally to find they expected me to order this holy edict terminated as falsehood like any other jilted lover. “Whatever you decide will not change the outcome once Lord Munin's feet land upon Atlantian soil.” I reported to them. I held up a copy of the edict in question. “The Herald leaves tomorrow to collect him ending all chances you have to prevent this event if you so choose to do.” I told them pointedly. I heard the crinkling of paper while from their minds I watched them rereading the document. “You have a week once he lands before the marriage and coronation ceremony happens to attempt in vain stopping it.” I added. I waited as murmurs of dissension circle me at my indirect insult.
“What is your enlightened point of view on this Lord Kestrel?” Burdish asked on cue.
“If I allow my romantic link to take charge, I would request, even demand, the Council to rebuke the edict.” I answered truthfully. I gave them a moment of hope before forcing them to face their duty to Atlantis. “But duty, nobility, and honour does not allow me such selfish an option.” I continued. A roar of insults circled the room as the new thoughts regarding my stance formed in their frustrated minds. It was clear by their shouted comments and from their minds that they wanted a scapegoat to allow them to refuse the edict diverting the potential wraith of Odin from their shoulders. A position I refused to fill even if I could easily place the Norse pantheon leader to heel beneath my will.
“Then what do you suggest we do Noble Kestrel?” the head of the assembly asked angrily. I did not resist flashing a condescending smile at him.
“Understanding the repercussions may help the enlightened Council of Atlantis to formulate the only option open to them.” I stated loudly. I ignored the continuing growl escaping my tigress escort who knew what was coming. “Without properly fighting this edict, the citizens of Atlantis will revolt.” I said harshly. “They will see it as the Council blocking the Throne of Atlantis to hold their power over the populace.” I explained. “You have a minor chance using the negative aspects of Lord Munin as base for your refusal.” I suggested. “But unless you put forth allowing Her Holiness Annianka to ascend to the throne alone.” I informed them. Their roar of refusal meet the growing growl of the tigress.
“The Royal Guards will not force this secondary outcome.” she growled at them. “Nor can we assist you if a civil war erupts because of your final decision.” she continued loudly. A stunned silence reigned in the hall. “We stand for the Throne of Atlantis which protects its citizens first and foremost.” she told them directly. “Which means we will defend them but cannot fight for them.” she concluded. I touched her shoulder making her slowly step back behind my right shoulder.
“If you allow this to pass, the citizen may still blame you for placing an inept King in power but not revolt against you directly.” I informed them. I spoke loud enough to be heard clearly to the furthest points in this vaulted chamber. “Or blame you for forcing innocent Annianka to stand alone at the head of this nation.” I continued in the same stentorian voice. I sensed the hidden minds in the room. Using the Council members' eyes, I searched for these secret observers to no avail. “Releasing the divine edict will help avoid the former be it reality or fiction.” I added quickly.
“So you also have doubts about the legitimacy of this decree?” one of them asked loudly.
“Frigga protecting her bastard son from Odin ire or Loki playing a farce upon the Atlantians are possibilities.” I replied. I did not wish to think or mention that this could be Annianka's doing nor explain that it could be the machinations of a disembodied entity residing in their Heartstone. “The will of gods is an unfathomable zone that mortals should not questions.” I stated louder. A strangled round of forced agreements ran around the chamber. “Acceptance is the only option to maintain peace upon the island.” I admitted to them. “As unfortunate a turn of event it is for myself.” I added with mock frustration. Miss Hope growled in disagreement and defiance to my suggestion to the Council.
“We thank you for your noble and honest counsel in this matter Lord Kestrel.” the leader stated to me. I could sense his displeasure as he grudgingly accepted my logic for the people of Atlantis.
“I understand your reluctance but you must accept for the security of your citizens.” I told them. “I must now excuse myself to deal with another aspect of this matter.” I continued at a faster pace. I bowed deeply to them. “Best I meet the future Prince of Atlantis since I may not return to Atlantis in many years.” I added. I tried to turn away before they could stop me with questions about the sudden timing of my departure.
“You pull away from us as we face such turmoil?” Burdish shouted at me. Miss Hope fell silent in my path blocking me from departing. I glanced up to meet her feral eyes questioningly at me.
“This event may remove me permanently from Atlantis if the Ones On High decide it is so.” I retorted with false anger. “As you must act for the betterment of Atlantis, I must obey those that sent me to your assistance.” I explained. “I will return if permitted to do so.” A round of hushed grumbles echoed in the chamber.
“As the Ones On High see fit.” the leader of the assembly accepted. I sensed the anger and frustration at losing the only being that appeared to temper their Holy Heart Annianka. I bowed once more to them before rushing from the Council Chamber unopposed. Without looking, I knew miss Hope was at my heels. She stopped me as we exited the Council Hall in the streets of Atlantis making me fear for a public spectacle taking place.
“Do you truly need to leave Atlantis?” she asked quietly. I realized quickly without my gifts that she held back the feral rage consuming her.
“They will seek an heir for the Throne born from the new King and Queen.” I stated calmly. “My presence would cast doubt on the bloodline of that heir because of my history with Her Holiness.” I explained. I did not wish to reveal the fact that I had already impregnated her.
“You have done so less than three hours ago.” she returned in a knowing whisper. I stared at her in utter shock as she slowly rose a hand to tap the side of her nose with a lone finger. “Her scent changed instantly at that moment.” she explained softly. “The other Royal Guards will know something drastic has changed in Her but will be unsure what it is.” she reported. “And they may smell your musk on the child without Lord Munin stench present.”
“Will they keep it a secret outside of their duties?” I asked slowly. “Nor tell the Her Holiness about it?”
“If the child retains the mental prowess of both parents...” she replied quickly. A purring chuckle ended the thoughts more powerfully than words ever could.
“This is not a factor proving me as father.” I returned. She gave me an unconvinced withered look. I sighed back at the tigress. “I will hope the child remains naive enough to ignore the truth or wise enough to keep it a secret.” I continued.
“I am certain it will be the most well guarded secret the Feral Guards hold to heart.” she told me. “Time will tell how the child will      react.”
“I will explain the situation to it.” I said softly. “It will do as I ask if I word it properly.”
“Children rarely do what they are told.” she reminded me. I chuckled while I discussed with the sentient spark inside Annianka. It had decided to be female and accepted slowing her physical growth until mother ended up with Lord Munin. She would grow at a normal      Atlantian rate keeping the secret for me even if her new conscious mind may forget about this promise.
There was an odd heighten level of consciousness within this spark of life. I had not found this in most beings linked closely as she was to this world and plane of being. I nearly questioned her directly about it but let it slide focusing on my last act as Envoy toward Atlantis before leaving. I was still unsure if I would ever return here before the last moment to save it but even that was unimportant to me. The anger of being turned away like a common fling by Annianka angered me and showed how strong a hold the entity within the stone had over her. I felt the situation here was lost and leaving might give me a chance to see a path I am missing.
“Do you wish to meet Young Lord Bryan now?” the tigress asked. This question pulled me from continuing the discussion with my newly conceived daughter. “And should I send word to the Herald that you will be departing on it when it sails to retrieve Lord Munin?”
“Yes on both cases.” I replied quickly. “With a mental wave my little thunder was winging to warn the Leviathan to collect Brother Famine, Chilörąn to replace me and assist me if I eventually returned. “I will have an associate needing a position in the Royal Kitchens.” I informed her. “He is a young boy from the land Chin and extremely competent making him a boon in the kitchen.” I continued easily.
“As you command Sir.” she replied. I eyed her confused for a moment. “I will treat you as Her Holiness' Right Hand or true King no matter who sits upon the throne.” she stated in a tense whisper. “I am assured that the other Captains and their soldiers feel the same way.”
“Let us speak to Young Lord Bryan as future Prince of Atlantis.” I remarked. She nodded and I was off with the tigress in the lead giving me a clear path to follow.
