Interlude: Captains' Meeting (3)

Ent growled as he stalked the back hallways of the Royal Towers. The crumpled note still clutched in his clawed hand as he moved along these unused routes. He barely had time to stop when Rez burst from one of the other halls nearly checking him into the solid stone wall. A rumbling grunt escaped Rez as an apology while growled still angered by this sudden call.
“You got the same message?” Ent growled at Rez. A nod, a grunt, and a held out crumpled paper was the only answer from the bigger man. “Why is Hope suddenly calling all of us together?” he added. Rez shrugged as they fell in stride walking further down the dim lit hallways.
“Maybe her new position has gone to her head.” Curd suggested from behind them. Ent turned to growl at the tiger that walked in silence behind them. Rez low rumbling chuckle echoed even if he had meant for it not to be heard. “But something has her thinking we should meet.” he continued. He moved in that silent gait only cats had to join the other two. He held up a only slightly damaged note to the other two. “Also guessing Jäz received one of these wherever he is right now.” he told them.
“What has gotten into that cat's head now?” Ent growled again.
“Best we make the rendezvous if we want to figure it out.” Curd returned with a matching growl.
“Enough!” Rez interjected. “We move.” he added in that rumbling voice. The other two nodded as they walked on.
The hallway had been unused for centuries as part of the old Royal Chambers that most believed haunted or cursed by the Usurper Queen. Dust lay thick on the floor and the trio kept have to remove the cobwebs that hung from the ceiling. Shafts of light pierced through the dilapidated shutters that hung at the few windows in this edge of the complex. They slowed as they now followed the single set of paw prints in the dust.
“What was the point of her calling us to meet here?” Ent grumbled.
“Security.” Rez whispered back. The wolf and tiger froze while Rez continued his cautious rolling walk forward.
“You have a idea about all this?” Curd called to his back.
“And these prints lead to the old Throne Room.” Ent noted.
“Yes and yes.” Rez tossed back. He did not stop as he neared the door half hidden in cobwebs. “She is being very cattish.” he added softer. The other two joined him to examine the passage. The cobwebs were parted but still hung before the door looking untouched.
“Only a Royal guard would spot that little trick.” Curd stated.
“And Hope always thought herself the better of all of us.” Ent remarked caustically.
“She is.” Rez grumbled. He pushed the door open as he crouched and shimmed his way into the room trying with much less success at leaving the cobwebs concealing his passage. Curd shrugged and motioned Ent forward. Ent clawed the remaining cobwebs from the door frame as he entered the room with a growl. Curd shook his head before following cautiously into the room.
“And we find ourselves back at the start of this mess.” Miss Hope greeted them. “Where everything went wrong with one crowning ceremony.” she continued. She seemed to be half ignoring them as they stood in this great room.
Dust coated every surface with the exception of Hope's paw prints showing she had been walkin in full circle before they arrived. Little knife like shafts of light breached the smoke and blood coated windows behind the lone throne set upon a dusty dais. In the light stabs, the darker patches of blood seemed to glitter freshly giving a feel of having entered just after the slaughter. The three men sniffed the air but found no smell a blood in the room.
“I was told that my grandfather stood here when he first turned into a great cat.” she mumbled half to herself. She placed herself where her ancestor had occupied that dark day. “Rumour from the eldest of the Royal Guards state him leaping with full claws over the others to lay the first of many killing blows from our kin folk.” she stated casually. Rez ducked and rolled clear as Hope attempted the manoeuvre falling short. “And then they all attacked ripping that monster to pieces.” she added.
“You called us here for a history lesson?” Ent remarked sarcastically.
“Best to know where the corruption started.” Rez declared. Ent and Curd turned to stare at him.
“Well put for an old bear.” Hope returned with a throaty chuckle. He chuckled back to the surprise of the other two Captains. “A sickness has taken root in Atlantis upon that day causing many different ripples.” she explained. Rez nodded while they waited in silence. “One of those ripples was our creation and actions upon that day.” she continued. Their head snapped up as two glared at her and the last member smiled sadly. “Last time we worked together while letting our animal free to do the right thing.” she added.
“You believe we should join together for a great butchery session?” Ent asked with a feral dark laugh.
“Working together to do the right thing even if blood must be spilled.” Rez corrected.
“But will Her Holiness who speaks so openly of peace agree with this idea?” Curd asked sombrely.
“She would not but another could understand and explain it to Annianka.” Hope hazarded. Ent and Rez nodded with knowing smiles while Curd looked to each face for a clue. “Lord Kestrel has proven with actions and words that he stands for Atlantis.” she explained bluntly to Curd.
“How and when do we get him crowned then?” Ent asked sarcastically.
“Foolish words.” Rez remarked.
“We ask a bird to explain our honourable actions to the one we serve?” Curd retorted arrogantly.
“Stop it!” Hope growled at them. “I think Her Holiness will eventually give us the order directly to stand with Lord Kestrel.” she continued calmer. “But that is not why I see us joining forces once more.” she corrected quickly. “I see another moment of the Atlantian throne gaining an heir not by choice.” she explained. “And I am assured that Rez will agree that the infection will surface fully at that time.” she added.
“None of the remaining nobles would hazard such a move.” Ent returned. He turned looking toward the door that had closed behind them. “And the Council will never attempt it without losing their strength over Atlantis.” he continued. He slowly glanced around the room as the other noticed his hackles rising. “Any of you feel like we are being watched?” he added in a whisper.
“Something with this abandon part of the Royal sector causes that to everyone Ent.” Curd replied as he sniffed around. “We would smell if someone was here.” he added rolling his eyes.
“Or the stories that the last King and Queen of Atlantis haunts this place until the rightful heir returns have gotten to you.” Hope suggested with a smirk. Rez had begun looking around in silence. “What do you think Rez?” she asked.
“This place has more memories of darkness than anywhere else for us.” he answered. His deep rumbling voice betrayed none of his feelings to them. “We stood as one group before this moment and need that to protect each other as history foreshadows repeating itself.” he continued. “Too bad Jäz is not here to join his wisdom to ours.” he added. Silence dropped upon them like a blanket.
“So what do the rest of you think of our odd bird Envoy?” Curd sliced into the silence.
“He will fight to his last breath.” Ent commented.
“Destroy himself to attempt saving us.” Rez remarked.
“Will be a bearer of dark deeds for noble causes.” Hope said softly. “And the person Annianka will depend on the most.” she added in a barely audible whisper.
“I think he will turn Atlantis upside down for whatever so called noble quest he sees fit.” Curd returned at them. “Just happy he is on Atlantis' side in the world.” he added in a purring chuckle.
“Definitely make excitement in this island's life.” Rez agreed. Ent nodded as he chuckled. Miss Hope sighed at them. “A bit of excitement will not kill us.” he added with a shrug.
“I will leave that in your paws since I see Her Holiness giving me more excitement than I believed possible.” she returned softly. The three men glanced at each other before staring as a group at her. “She was talking to what could only be the Heartstone itself.” she let slip out. “Something I have never heard of any other Hearts ever doing before.” she explained. They nodded gravely. “I just feel something is amiss without having proof.” she added quietly.
“You keep your eyes, ears, and nose on our Holy Heart while we deal with Atlantis and Lord Kestrel.” Rez stated quickly. “Correct my fellow Captains?”
“It is our sworn duty after all.” Curd agreed with a smirk.
“We serve Atlantis and her Holiness as is needed.” Ent returned formally. “If you permit it,” he began softer, “I will escort you back to Her Holiness' side Miss Hope.” He bowed to her as he waited for a reply. A round of nods ended this meeting as Curd and Rez headed for the door. Hope and Ent walked behind them in silence until the other were far ahead of them. “A word outside of our Royal Guardians' bloodline?” he whispered to her.
“What is on your mind Ent?” she returned as quietly as he had.
“I am sure you have heard that your cousin Valeria, Curd's younger sister, has been seen with myself in public often of late.” he replied hesitantly. A soft giggle escaped Hope making Ent blush. “We have not informed Curd yet of our plans to be mated.” he mumbled shyly.
“I am sure Curd would see you as a competent mate for her.” she remarked. “It will not stop him from acting superior to you in public.” she informed him grudgingly. “Unless you think you could best him outright on the practice field or the hunting grounds.” she added with a giggle.
“I may be able to fight him to a standstill on the field but nothing hunts like that tiger when challenged.” he returned quickly. He sighed deeply at the thought. “I wonder if we could forget to tell him until after our mating ceremony has been placed upon us.” he added with a mischievous chuckle.
“That would earn you a few hours in the practice field with him just out of sheer pleasurable retaliation.” Hope informed him.
“Better than going to the mating ceremony with wrapped wounds.” Ent returned laughing.
“Speak to him directly and from your heart Captain Ent.” she told him. “I think he might surprise you and let this be a reason for the Lupus and Felines to work together easier.” she concluded. The stepped together from the older parts of the Royal estates into the streets of Atlantis.
“As you suggest Miss Hope.” he stated before bowing to her. Curd and Rez stood a few feet away shaking hands before going their own way. “We need private words Captain Curd!” he called out to the tiger. Curd turned a bemused look at Ent and Hope.
“I must be off but rest assured Captain Curd that Captain Ent does not shirking his duties to me because of something much more pressing.” Hope remarked to Curd. “Good parting to both of you.” she added quickly. She rushed to disappear with the few other pedestrians on these smaller inner streets as her path lead her back to the healing complex that housed Annianka.

Captain Rez (9)

“We are gathering in the dining room to discuss this mornings' visitor.” Meli informed me through the door. “And our snake did not return from the Council's soiree.” she added. I could feel her merriment in her voice at this without needing my mental abilities.
“I will be down in a moment Meli.” I answered. I heard her sandals slapping as she headed down the upper hallway to leave. I nodded my acceptance of what must be done and of what the other Ancient would think after my assault upon Wisdom. I walked in silence down the hallway and back stairwell to enter the dining room. Meli and Sert sat at one end with an empty chair between them where a platter of breakfast food sat.
“We cannot be sure of Rez' position toward your presence in Atlantis including how our Holy Heart is giving you such freedoms while you are here.” Sert announced. I had barely had time to reach my seat before he spoke. “He may already be set against you and will not take your words with proper understanding and acceptance.” Sert continued. I sat before a platter containing cheese, bread, and cold meats. I nodded toward Sert to show I was listening and understanding his words before slowly picking at the food in my plate.
“He may have spoken to Captain Ent and Captain Hope to learn more about Lord Kestrel before meeting him.” Meli suggested. She filled my cup with tea as she spoke without spilling a drop. “Which might suggest that he will be receptive to Lord Kestrel's words and comments.” she added. I noticed how both my companions dug into their meal quickly while I slowly picked and chewed my food.
“Both points have merit but it does not matter which side he sits when he enters this conversation.” I stated calmly. “What matters is his parting thoughts and convictions.” I explained casually.
“True.” Sert interjected around a piece of meat.
“It's not polite to talk with your mouth full.” Meli chided him. I nearly laughed hearing her acting so motherly to Sertian who was her senior by a few decades.
“True.” he retorted while still chewing.
“It is also impolite to refer to me as 'Lord Kestrel' while I am sitting here.” I mused out loud. I hide my half smile as I popped a piece of cheese in my mouth.
“Pardon Sir.” Meli returned lowering her head. I gritted my teeth as I swallowed ignoring the look of satisfaction Sert gave Meli.
“May we make something very clear when we meet in private like this?” I asked feigning calmness. I waited a few moments to give them a chance to agree which came in the form of a nod. “My name as Annianka has given me is 'Kestrel” and I would prefer to be called that than referred to as 'Lord Kestrel'.” I continued slowly. I looked from one to the other for comments.
Sert nodded as he chewed on a chunk of bread while Meli still appeared mollified by my request.
“As you wish Sir.” she finally stated.
“That includes not using the term 'Sir' as if I am your master.” I added quickly and harshly. I took a breath to calm myself. “While we are together in private, I wish us to behave more like family and friends and not as servant and master.” I explained slowly. I searched their mind trying to find a thread of thought to help them understand what I asked of them. “I learn as much from both of you that you learn from me.” I added. I hope that this would clarify my point but I could not be fully certain nor would I play with their minds to force this behaviour on them.
They both smiled. First at each other before turning toward me to nod their agreement and understanding. Sert shovelled his food into his mouth while Meli ate at a normal pace chatting idly with us. Their plate were empty while mine had just passed the half way mark.
“Are you not hungry?” Meli asked worried.
“Maybe it is more food than he is used to.” Sert suggested. “We could help you finish the plate if you liked?” he added with a wolfish grin. I chuckled deeply at them.
“I eat as a friend taught me while visiting.” I stated. “It is a way of gaining more pleasure and nutrition from any good meal.”
“How is that possible?” Sert asked stunned. Meli looked only mildly perplexed by my words.
“You can savour more of the taste if you eat slowly which increases your enjoyment of the food.” I told them. Meli nodded to me and I could see in her mind that this was not a new concept for her. “The faster you eat, the more food is forced into your stomach which can only hold a limited amount.” I began slowly. “Your stomach will push the food downward into and through your guts because of the overload it faces.” I explained. I saw Meli's eyes sudden sparkle with understanding as she became very agitated.
“So the specific receptors for nutrition will miss have the benefits because the food goes passed them too quickly.” she screamed out.
“Since my human form and advanced spirit requires more nutrition, I eat very slowly when I have the chance.” I commented. I slowly placed a piece of bread in my mouth and began chewing slowly. Sert sat thinking as he stared at his empty plate.
“Would that mean that I would not still be hungry if I ate slower?” he mused. He was not sure he wanted to know the answer but I felt like congratulating him from continuing along the lines of the explanation.
“I am not sure.” Meli stated. I could read the continuing chain of thoughts forming in her head as she tried to discover a truthful answer for Sert.
“It would depend on how much nutrition your body needs.” I suggested with a shrug.
“That could explain him being still hungry but we need to wait for the next meal to test the idea.” Meli replied smiling. I set myself to slowly complete my meal only half listening to Meli and Sert discussing his possible eating problem. I was savouring the last piece of cheese when a knock was heard at the door. Sert rushed to meet our guest while Meli hurried to set a new pot of tea for Captain Rez' visit. I slowly made my way to the foyer already knowing that we would be in the garden to discuss what was on the Ursus' mind.
Rez stood in the foyer in silence. Sert's comment gained nothing but half growls from the man playing mute. I approached but did not hold my hand out to him. After the event with Captain Hope, I had decided that I did not like feeling claws sinking into the skin of my hands. I bow to him receiving a nod of his head and typical half growl. I motion him to follow as I lead him to the inner garden.
“Guard the door Sert.” I ordered once inside. He nodded as he tapped the butt of his halberd against the stone floor. I turned slowly to face the huge man looking nervously at his surroundings. “You wish to speak privately,” I began, “it has been accomplished for you.” Captain Rez nodded slowly to me. He moved into the clear spot of the garden to take a precarious seat on one of the stone benches. “What words did you wish no other could hear Captain?” I asked softly. I stood waiting as he gazed once more around the garden before releasing a deep breath.
“Atlantis is stricken with a great ailment that has been growing for a very long time.” Rez stated in a deep rumbling voice. “I do not believe you can cure it.” he started slowly turning his words into a whisper. “But” he interjected with a shrug. “I wished a chance to thank you before you started your attempt.” he concluded in a whispering rumble.
“You may be right about my inability to heal Atlantis.” I responded quietly. “I may have to allow this pretty island to vanish from the world to cure it of its infection.” I continued calmly. Rez' face rose to look me in the eyes.
“She will resist you in your attempt.” he returned with a half smile. He did not even have to mention her by name to let me know it was Annianka he spoke of.
“She will learn to accept my actions or use her full powers to stop me.” I stated. “That may be enough to actually cure this disease as is her place to do as Heart of Atlantis.”
“You would challenge Annianka herself if you believed you could heal Atlantis?” Rez asked. His tone had raised as he spoke smoothing his natural rumbling voice.
“I would challenge Odin and his inkling to accomplish what I must to succeed here for Atlantis and the world.” I answered bluntly. Rez was on his feet and moving to stand nose to nose with me. “If this is a problem than I suggest you retire and leave before I am forced to activate a final curative here.” I added boldly. Like Ent, I sensed Rez searching for non existent signs of fear in me.
“And miss all the fun of you turning this place upside down and inside out?” he rumbled at me. Rolling deep chuckle escaped him as he returned to take his seat. He motion to the bench next to me. I sat slowly trying to peer in this man's mind just to see the animal based thoughts of his Ursus nature. “Not on your life am I leaving.” he exclaimed smiling broadly at me.
“Then I expect you will make things easier for me while I play around finding the source of this infection before applying a cure?” I hazarded.
“No.” he interjected. “I will butt heads with you every chance I get just to find out where you are at in your search.” he explained with evil glimmer in his eyes. “Plus, it is what the others would expect of me.” he added with a shrug and a wink.
“That is a very scary thought coming from a bear.” I remarked unable to hide a smirk.
“Yes it is.” he returned still chuckling. “As for meeting Captain Jäzærha, it must be delayed indefinitely.” he continued softly. Something in his tone and the feeling I felt from his inner bear screamed of his protective nature. “We do not see him returning permanently from his sabbatical within the next hundred years or so.” he concluded.
“You believe he may be in trouble?” I responded. I could not help showing my excitement at a possible adventure.
“Not in the way you think.” Rez returned. “I believe his honour made him stand for someone within the temples of the sun and moon but I believe it will cause no problems for Atlantis directly.” he explained. “Out of all of us, it is typical of him to spend more time away from Atlantis.” he continued.
“His honour pushes him to want to save the world outside the borders of Atlantis.” I commented. Rez nodded with a knowing smile. “And something the Ferret Captain and Myself have in common.” I let slip out.
“Saving the world is all good and noble but for me protecting Atlantis and Her Holiness Annianka is more than enough.” he returned with a soft rumbling chuckle. “I must guess by your words that you will be off Atlantis as much as you will be here?” he mused in a rumbling whisper.
“The works of the Ones On High do not only focus upon Atlantis alone.” I stated softly. “I will need to absent myself from time to time to perform my tasks.” I told him. “But I am sure the grouping of Royal Guards can keep Atlantis in one piece while I'm away.”
“Not all the groupings of Royal Guards see things in the same way.” he returned. “We mostly stand apart from each other while still doing our duty.” he explained slowly. “The Ursus most of all, especially myself.” he added.
“Why keep each clan apart like that?” I asked. My curiosity at understanding this man that I could only see his animalistic thought took over me. He gave me an appraising look before speaking.
“The Ursus are the only ones that sees a corruption in Atlantis without simply blaming the Council for it.” he answered directly. “The others seem determined to prove the Council as the source of evil and remove them from their power.” he explained. “Replace each member with new members that they see as more honourable.” he corrected quickly.
“Well they did stand for the Council once before.” I returned softly.
“And it turned us into beasts.” Rez replied without rancour. “What happened a thousand years or so ago cannot be changed now and my bears like it that way.” he added with an evil smirk.
“Some still see what befell the Royal Guards back then as a great curse.” I muttered.
“Let them.” he interjected. “None of us gifted with this sees it as a problem anymore.” he continued. “I will have a list of the places in the world that seem to need divine intervention for you, Kestrel.”
“Thinking Jäzærha might have a point?” I asked with a chuckle.
“Best he not be the only one saving the world.” Rez responded with a shrug.
“I thank you for understanding my placement in the world and upon Atlantis Captain Rez.” I stated formally. I rose to my feet bowing deeply to him in flawless Atlantian fashion. “I will inform you of what I discover of those places in need of help.” I promised him. He nodded before rising to his feet. He saluted me in the fashion of the Ursus.
“Good to know someone is helping all of us.” he whispered to himself. “It's late and my troops will wonder of my state.” he said louder. “By your leave Sir.” he continued formally with a bow. “I better return to see if my troops have decided to nap instead of working.” he added with a hearty rumbling laugh. I lead him back toward the doors of the house in the same silence he had entered. He gave me one grunt and nod before walking away.
I was still by the door with Sert as we spotted Cole returning home. He looked tired, annoyed , and dishevelled from his time with the Council. I knew without looking that Sert was smiling about Cole's condition. Cole said nothing to either of us as he entered and headed straight to his room upstairs. He only returned to join use for the evening meal before we all retired for the night.

Mental Voyages (8)

“We truly do not know much of them.” Meli answered quickly. She elbowed Sert as I felt her hoping he could fulfil my request.
“Other than them acting superior to other Atlantians.” Sert muttered. “I may have been a trainee in their guards but they truly do not tell their guards more than they do to the other Atlantians.” he explained. He shrugged at me as I felt his regret at not being able to help.
“What of rumours about them?” I persisted. I knew their attitude toward the Council and the representative was based on something they did not wish to reveal outright.
There is no honour in repeating hearsay sir.” Sert returned hard. I shock my head at him before trying again.
“Even in rumours you can find truth as long as you look at it fully.” I explained. “The grain of truth should be clearer once all the rumours are heard and evaluated.” I continued. I could still feel him resisting the idea of saying possible falsehoods even about the Council of Atlantis that both of them distrusted fully. “But I leave that in your hands to decide what you see as acceptable Sertian.” I added easily. He nodded as he continued to run the hundred or so rumours through his mind.
“Oh!” Meli exclaimed suddenly. “We have received word that Captain Rez of the Ursus Royal Guards will be visiting in the morning.” she stated quickly.
“And he wishes to talk.” Sert commented. All previous thoughts flew from his mind as he pondered the meaning of the message. “Captain Hope informed us personally of his visit and intentions.” he continued in passing. “Which also suggests he wishes to gauge your mental strength unlike Captain Ent's physical challenge.” he added casually.
“What did happen between you and Captain Hope?” Meli asked. I turned to face her fearing to see ideas of me and Captain Hope spending private time together in the near future. “It was odd how you two glared at each other while holding hands before you two walking together to this residence.” she explained softly. I smile at her weighing my words before speaking them.
“A vision.” I answered. “It was very powerful and leap to her mind because of the physical contact.” I lied.
“What type of vision?” she stated curious. “What was it about?” she added as I remained silent.
“Simply about a moment while she will be guarding Her Holiness Annianka.” I scoffed. “It seemed to make her feel more confident about taking on such a noble position.” I added quickly. I hoped that it would draw her away from asking more about that moment since I would not reveal Hope sinking claws into my flesh or my attempt at electrifying her.
“You will not reveal it to us?” she half whined.
“It was just a passing flash that truly didn't remain in my memory.” I replied with a sheepish grin. “Not all my visions stay in my head once proper warning is given for it.” I explained. “Best we all get a good nights rest to meet Captain Rez in full control of our abilities.” I suggested. They both nodded slowly allowing me to head to my bed chamber.
I was not planning to sleep but would visit some of the groups that believed they had sent me hear to stop the destruction of Atlantis. I sent my mental body floating upward through an astral portal to arrive in the vaulted dark halls of the paternal beings from which had sprung the Old Ones and the Ancient Ones. Those two grouping of deistic forces believed I was a child of their combined blood.
“So grandchild of our lesser offspring, what word have you brought us?” the shaded figure leading the assemble stated. The gravelly rumbling of his voice was annoying to me.
“Seems my half sister Callistra visited Atlantis.” I returned. My voice hinted of musical tonality traditional to the Ancient's side of my false bloodline. I perceived the grating effect it had on their ears. Music was offensive to them and I relished adding it to my reports to make them not call upon me too often. “Would that suggest that she failed you?” I sang softly. I heard the grinding of their teeth in the silent chamber pleasing me to no end.
“Why would we send something as mad and twisted as her to stop a disaster?” he snapped at me. “Return and find the traitor that will destroy Atlantis with it's own technology Alal!” he roared at me. “Ignored what that psychotic half sister of yours is doing.” he added.
I realized they had sent her not to save Atlantis. Without my full powers available to me, I could not gleam what purpose she served to them while playing like me the role of a lesser being to them instead of her true nature as Universe's only daughter. My mind attempted in vain to deduce the reason for sending her to Atlantis at all. She stuck her nose into everything as well as myself but she was prone to believe that to save something it must be utterly destroyed. I nearly handed over her time bomb to them claiming him the traitor. They would never know the difference since once the probed his mind it would melt away giving them nothing. I sighed mentally and remained silently watching these self proclaimed powers that be.
“Why are you still here Alal?” their leader asked.
“Waiting to complete my report.” I replied with mock cheerfulness.
“Report!” he ordered angrily.
“No sign of the corruption you have spoken of.” I lied fluidly. “What ever prompted their so-called 'Usurper Queen” to act like she did must have left Atlantis.” I continued smiling with servility at him. “I will remain to make sure my findings are correct but ...”
“Leave!” he roared at me. I stepped away before slipping through another astral portal but it was not back to my body. I exited into the great hall of light that the Ancient Ones had built for themselves to gather and discuss their lofty ideals. The hall was mostly empty having but a handful of the Ancients themselves scattered in the open space.
“And why are we graced with a visit from you Alal?” Mystral whispered at him. The Ancient One of Magic did not hide the animosity she held for me.
“Is it wrong for the son of an Ancient One to visit home from time to time?” I replied softly to her.
“Coming from the son of Passion and Madness, I chose not to answer.” she replied arrogantly. She turned to move away but was stop by Medea, the Ancient of Law.
“The blood of the Ancients flows in his vein giving him such right Mystral.” he told her. “What good words do you bring to us Alal?” he asked me. His tones were soft and controlled as he always had been with me.
“But the blood of our sworn enemies flows in those same veins.” Mystral muttered before walking away.
“My physical form was nearly killed before I reached Atlantis.” I began announcing to him. “Got into two fights, one physical and one quantum magical.” I continued. “Terrified a section of their Council and found our creation Hope sitting in the middle of all of it.”
“Hope?” he croaked. I felt the shock that rushed through him. “How is that possible since she is suppose to be with Brigit.” he continued.
“Since Atlantis is under Odin's banner, I must believe that Brigit was accepted into his court.” I answered. “How has Wisdom been handling the separation from her 'sisters'?” I whispered.
“She has been working very hard learning all she can of law to a point of knowing things I have forgotten.” he returned with a shy smile. “And she is the problem that keeps Mystral angry at you.” he added quietly. He place a hand on my shoulder drawing me behind a set of pillars so others could not spot us.
“She still thinks I had something to do with the fifth part of Annabadurziagkia not manifesting?” I asked feigning disbelief. “The spell was her creation while I was just a stand in like yourself Medea.”
“I know and have tried explaining it to her but something makes her believe otherwise Alal.” he told me directly. “Try not to encourage her anger toward you.” he added softly. I sighed and nodded to him.
“Another bit of information for you.” I stated. “I found evidence of Callistra having a hand in Atlantis.” I told him. He became very quiet and closed. “You know something about it?”
“Not directly.” he answered. “We have been detached from the world for a long time but sometimes hear rumours of events.” he mused half to himself. “It seems she searches for the missing part with as much fervour as Mystral did when it happened.” he finally told me.
“And she believes it is in Atlantis?” I asked incredulously. He gave me one quick nod of agreement. “She definitely received more of the madness than I inherited.” I retorted laughing. “I will do my best not to have her interfere too much upon the island.” I added seriously.
“It is all you can do with her lurking around.” he said calmly. “Best you see your mother Ishtar while you are here or none of us will have any peace.” he added with a chuckle.
“I could never forget to visit her.” I returned rolling my eyes. “She would break the rules and visit me on Atlantis as punishment.” Medea chuckled at this as he nodded vigorously. I left him by the pillar still chuckling as I moved back to the middle of the hall walking very slowly. Ishtar stood with Gaia in silence. She seemed to be glaring at the Earth's creator.
“What has you fuming again mother?” I drawled behind her. Gaia glance passed her to smile at me before bowing her head in a parting gesture. Ishtar turned and glared up at me. “What's wrong?” I asked in a whisper.
“The Council of the Ancients are debating us fully disconnecting from the Earth.” she reported. “If it passes, they would want you to return here permanently.” she continued. Even with my abilities to sense emotions and thoughts from these higher being limited, I could feel her anger fuel by her passion set against this plan. “We cannot allow this to happen without giving each of us a right to chose for ourselves if we wish to leave it behind.” she concluded.
“Gaia is ready to leave before they decide?” I asked. She looked at me with a confusion I knew well on her face. “She feels like the Earth is one of her children which she would never abandon.” I explained. She hated my ability to see things she could not. “She already grieves losing one child because of rules.” I reminded my false mother.
“Considering how unruly you were as a child.” she returned teasingly. “No wonder they decide that one crossed breed was enough to deal with.” she added. Her features softened as she spoke.
“Why did they not shove me into that prison with the others?” I whispered.
“I would have turned on all of them for thinking they could do that to my boy.” she returned. A predatory smile shone on her face showing why she is the seen as Passion both in war and love. “How has being mortal been treating you?” she continued.
“My two adoptive mothers are very respectful of my abilities and attitude.” I replied with a shy smile. “And Atlantis is a wonder to behold and live in.” I continued. My face must have betrayed my thoughts of Annianka at that moment.
“So what is her name?” Ishtar asked excitedly. I felt myself blush as I grumbled under my breath. “Don't be shy if you found something to inflame your passion son.” she stated quickly. “It is a family trait after all.” she added giggling.
“Hope sits upon the religious throne of Atlantis.” I answered in a whisper. I saw the shock as her eyebrows shot up, the white of her eyes grew to double the size of her multicoloured irises, and her gasp was heard throughout the hall. I looked around to see the few still in the hall glancing in our direction including Medea. “I've already told Medea but I believe it would be best keeping it quiet mother.” I told her formally.
“Last time you two were together a town was incinerated you fool!” she howled back at me.
“And I still feel cheated for not getting the chance to do it myself.” I growled back at her. With the others eyes upon us, I had to play the role of the merciless offspring of Old Madness raping Passion. “If she tries to destroy something, I will get it done before she has a chance to redeem myself for that one episode mother!” I concluded harshly. I turned away glaring as I marched toward the doors of the grand hall of lights. All the other cleared my path long before I reached them with one exception.
I did not believe it possible when she hit me. I dropped back from Wisdom's hit but could not get away as she grappled my collar with her other hand. She slammed me hard against one of the pillars. Her face was scant inches from mine and all I could think was how much she reminded me of Annianka in that moment of passion. I fought the urge to kiss her as she slammed me again against the pillar with both hands now firmly attached to my chest plate.
“You know where one of my sisters is.” she whispered to me through unmoving lips. “Tell me!” she ordered.
“She sits in Atlantis.” I whispered back mentally to her. “Let go off me insect!” I stated out loud.
“Right cross.” she whispered. Her lips did not move as she spoke. One quick nod was all the warning I gave her before swinging my right fist at her. She stamped her foot to mimic the sound of a solid connecting hit as she threw her body before my fist. The gasps and murmurs proved the effectiveness of this little trick we had performed on them. She lay grasping the left side of her face looking up in mock fear at me as I sneered down at her.
“Never put a hand on your betters!” I stated with false anger. I snorted once at her before continuing my exit path. The astral portal opened before me instantly and closed just as quickly behind me. I lay on my bed in Atlantis once more with none of my questions truly answered. I closed my eyes to ponder this while slipping into a state of meditative sleep. A soft knock at my door pulled me away from the spiralling thoughts within my mind.

Interlude: Report to Annianka (2)

Once Kestrel left with Colêsträ, Sertian and Mekiliean departed to report to Her Holiness Annianka without Kestrel's knowledge. The walked in silence not wanting others to hear what ran through their mind. Both still could not think of a way to explain to Annianka about the events with Captain Ent, Captain Hope, or Lieutenant Curd. They had but a few moments alone to discuss what they could or should reveal to their leader about Lord Kestrel's actions and those of her Royal Guard Captains. They still feared that anything they said would reflect badly upon Ent and his aggressive behaviour toward Kestrel.
“Why are we doing this?” Sert asked suddenly. He had stopped before the Royal Halls. “We cannot explain this without making one of them appear like the aggressor.” he stated bluntly.
“We state to Her Holiness what we have witnessed and let her honour guide her decision.” Meli returned calmly. “It is all we can do without lying to her about everything simply to protect all parties involved.”
“And what of the untypical behaviour we have witnessed?” he reminded her. “What will that cause if she has feeling for him as you have commented?” he added quieter. Meli stared at him for a moment in shock that he had heard her comment regarding Annianka's affection toward Lord Kestrel.
“I believe it was innocent and she will see it in the same light.” she reported softly. “And it may have been done for show to make Lord Kestrel more trusting toward our feline friend if she is to be Her Holiness' Honour Guard.” she suggested with a shrug.
“Best we get it done with quickly before he returns from meeting the Atlantian Council.” Sert replied. He started walking again striding faster to reach their gold. Meli had to quick march to keep up with her friend who was a head taller than her. “What if we see or discover something that would be best not to mention to her?” he tossed over his shoulder at her.
“We will decide that later Sertian.” Meli grumbled back. “Have you spotted anyone during this walk?” she commented softly. Sert looked around as he walked and his paced slowed. “I must believe that is a 'no' answer.” she continued. “Ideas?” she added as she fell in stride next to him.
“None at all but she may have an answer for us.” he returned with a shy chuckle. Captain Hope stood at the side gate that lead into the garden they were to meet Annianka in.
“Pleasant evening.” Captain Hope purred at them. “I am sure your walk was quiet and clear of possible eaves droppers?” she asked with a cattish grin.
“You had your Felines clear a path for us?” Meli asked in stunned shock.
“Orders of Her Holiness were to make sure you could reach Her when you wish it.” Hope replied still smiling. Curd stepped out of a nearby shadow to nod at them. “The Feline Guards obey orders very well.” she added nodding to Curd.
“I thank you for this favour Captain Hope.” Sert stated. He seemed to prepare himself to bow formally at her but hesitated. He suddenly straightened to his full height in a parade stance to deliver a crisp salute of the Royal Guards to her. “I may not be one of your troops but my heart will always side with those that stand for honour and righteousness mam.” he whispered. Hope's smile softened at his words as she returned the salute.
“If Lord Kestrel remains in Atlantis, I will speak with the other Royal Guard Captains about allow you to join in some of their training session upon your availability guardian Sertian.” Captain Hope told him. “And inform Lord Kestrel that Captain Rez will be visiting in the morning to speak with him.” she added. Meli stared at her face hunting for some sign of hidden motive but saw nothing.
“I will promise that the Felines will not use their claws that often.” Curd comment. The derisive chuckle that followed had Mekiliean grasping Sert's arm to stop him from doing something stupid. He turned his head to look at Curd.
“I would rather face them fully than be coddled by them Lieutenant Curd.” Sert told him calmly. Curd stared at him for a moment before nodding back to him. The sneer he had worn had disappeared to be replaced by a blank stare. “I also thank you for our safe passage sir.” he added quickly. Curd remained silently staring passively.
“She's waiting and I will warn you when Lord Kestrel departs the soiree so you may return before him.” Captain Hope stated, She held the gate open for them before taking a position with Curd next to her guarding it.
A few of Annianka's experimental sprouts lit the half cobbled pathway leading them deeper into the garden. Meli had taken the lead with Sert walking protectively at her back along the narrow paths. Annianka sat on a stone bench with a circle of a half dozen of her more mature glow plants giving the open space brilliant lighting. A pot of tea sat steeping on a small stone table with three cups ready to be used. Sertian bowed deeply to her while Meli curtsied at his side.
“Please have some tea and let us discuss what my little Kestrel has been up to.” Annianka stated without moving from her seat. Meli filled the cups and handed one to Annianka before giving one to Sert and then taking the remaining cup last. The two sat cross legged on the ground at Her Holiness' feet like children. “I have heard rumours that Lord Kestrel has meet Captain Ent and Captain Hope.” she comment softly to them.
“Lord Kestrel was giving me a training session upon the battle field when one of the Council's military trainers interfered.” he began slowly. “Captain Ent decided to take that moment to test Lord Kestrel's metal in combat.” he continued.
“And Lord Kestrel trounced him?” Annianka asked with a giggle. “Hopefully he did not injure him too badly.” she added. The mischievous smile she wore belittle the concern that sounded in her voice.
“Only his pride may have been injured as Lord Kestrel proved himself superior to him without weapons.” Meli admitted. She smiled as she spoke.
“Good that will have Ent convinced of Kestrel's abilities earning him respect.” Annianka commented half to herself.
“Good enough a showing to earn him greeting from Captain Ent's pack.” Meli stated softly. Her Holiness stared at her for a moment in silence. “I am not sure if he was being sincere with his greeting but it was done very publicly.” she added quickly.
“He was sincere Meli.” Annianka whispered. “My little bird will do much good for Atlantis while I can keep him here.”
“The meeting with Captain Hope and Lieutenant Curd was much less dramatic.” Sert continued quickly. Meli glanced at him spotting the hint of a blush touching his cheeks. “It consisted with a long moment of them holding hands as if deciding if they should shake hands or rip each others' arm off.” he continued at a more relaxed pace. “She then escorted us to our new residence while walking at Lord Kestrel's side holding his arm very politely.” he concluded.
“She acted as if he was a feline like herself instead of a foreigner.” Meli corrected. “She held his arm as a close companion or possible love interest would.”
“It is easy falling for that man's subtle charms.” Annianka whispered. A slow blush showed on her cheeks before she sip at her tea focusing on the liquid in her cup in silence.
“May we know once more how you know this man most Holy Annianka?” Sert asked. She stared into her cup as she spoke.
“Souls can be reborn in new lives if they are needed in the world.” she told them. “I was but a teen when I found him trapped in the form of kestrel broken and tattered nearly dead.” she explained. Her eyes lost focus as her face paled a bit making her blush glow brighter. “I healed him and watched aver him like when he was brought from the harbour.” she continued slower. “Then an army of raiders arrived ready to destroy the town and take all of us as slaves or worse.”
“Nothing in the history of Atlantis speaks of such dishonourable event.” Meli protested.
“We were not upon Atlantis during that lifetime.” she told them. Their eyes widened at her words. “Kestrel finally dropped his guise and showed himself for what he was smiting the raiders to the last man leaving a ring of ravaged corpses around the town.” she explained. “This is when the town turn on me for having such an unholy creature at my hand, calling me a spawn of unholiness because of him.” she whispered. Tears ran down her cheek unnoticed by her.
“But you are the Most Holy of all being the physical manifestation of the Heart of Atlantis itself!” Sert growled. A sad half smile came to Annianka's face.
“I may be holy here but back then things were different.” she replied. She closed her eyes causing the tear drops to become rivulet running down her face. “It was not enough that I sent him away.” she continued. “They were ready to burn me alive when I finally snapped and turned their fire against them.” she whispered. Her eyes became haunted as the memories of her actions resurfaced in her mind. “My fire turned the hamlet into a scorched crater from the power I unleashed upon them.”
“You annihilate a complete village?” Meli uttered in a strangled whisper.
“They deserve no less for their actions against you Holy Annianka.” Sert stated bluntly.
“I lay in the middle of the crater unable to move or think seeing the atrocity I had caused.” Annianka stated angrily. Kestrel return to me trying to get me to stand and leave that place but I told him to leave and never return.” she continued. “He whispered the words 'I am sorry' before leaving me to my sorrow.” she added.
“He saved the hamlet for you and they condemned you for it.” Sert stated back. “Why feel sorrow for defending yourself from such evil?”
“Because no one deserve to be utterly destroyed.” Annianka whispered. “It was not just their body I destroyed, I burned their souls out of existence.” she explained. “I lay for days there and let myself die for the crime I had wrought upon them.” she concluded.
Sert glanced at Meli seeing her skin turned white as Annianka's word sunk in. She mouthed the words “burned their souls” silently while Annianka stared into her tea cup silently shedding tears for those people that planned to do such evil upon her. He reached out to place a hand on Mekiliean's shoulder gently squeezing it. His other hand reached forward to touch Annianka's knee softly. Meli turned to look at her childhood friend still mouthing the same words again in a silent repetition. Sert glanced up but Annianka still stared blindly into her tea cup while tear continued to run down her cheeks.
“Lord Kestrel will not stay long in the company of the evils that live in our Council.” he stated slowly. “It is best that we return before he arrives to find us missing.” he reminded them. Meli nodded slowly still stunned to silence by Annianka's revelation.
“Yes.” Annianka interjected. “Quickly before he discovers your absence.” she added. She was on her feet helping them to theirs before Sert realized it. He ushered Meli quickly down the path leaving Annianka in the clearing alone. Captain Hope spotted them as Sert rushed Meli before him. Hope did not ask as she and Curd held the gate open for them to escape back into the emptied streets of Atlantis. Sert waited until they were out of hearing range of the two Feline Guards before stopping and forcing Meli to face him.
“Meli!” he called as he held her shoulders firmly in his hands.
“She did say she burned their souls?” she whispered back. She was still pale as she stared into his eyes trembling in his grip. “I did not dream that, did I?” she added a little louder.
“She said that but it could not be possible.” he told her. “We learned that as children that souls are immortal creations that link us to the gods above us.” he stated half to convince himself. “Correct?”
“Souls can die but it takes a lot to accomplish it.” she replied softly. “I am unsure if Her Holiness is powerful enough to destroy a hamlet full of souls.” she continued. “If she can, it explain why Lord Kestrel acts like she is above him Sertian!” she exclaimed. She shifted from foot to foot in a small imitation of dancing in place. “It also explain why she can manipulate all the five elements.” her words tumbling out. “She is a greater deity!” she added merrily.
“What?” Sert asked dumbfounded.
“It also explain why Lord Kestrel was sent here.” she continued as she ignored his question. She started rushing back toward their residence quickly. “To watch over her like he must have been doing in that past life she spoke of.” she prattled on. “It all makes sense now.” she added. She increased her pace now causing Sert to rush to keep up with her. They reached home in less time it had taken for them to reach the odd turning meeting with Annianka.
“I still do not understand all of that.” Sert admitted once they were inside the estate. Neither had spotted Kestrel returning only a few paces behind them. “But as long as one of us understands, it is good enough for me.” he added. The door opened at their back making both turn toward it. Kestrel smiled at them before asking them to speak with him in the garden regarding their knowledge of the Council.
